Theysetoffandiscoverthatexploringisn'tasdifficultasfirstthoughtwhentheygoonaniceeasydriveandfindLakeVictoria,ofwhomtheVictorianExplorersthoughtwasthesourceoftheNile.HowevertheyarethentoldthatitisnottheactualsourceoftheNileandthereweretwootherdisputedlocationsforit,oneinRwandaandoneinBurundi.However,JeremyClarksoninsistedthatbothoftheselocationswerewronganddecidedtoheadwesttowardsLakeEdwardtoseewhethertherewasalinkbetweenthatlakeandLakeKivuinRwanda.
Intheirjourneywest,wheretheyvisittheEntebbeAirportandfromthereseetheFordScorpioEstateback-upcar.TheycontinueintoKampala,Uganda'sCapitalCitywheretheygetheldupinatrafficjamovernight,themosthurrendoustrafficthey'deverseen.
Theycontinueonwell-maintainedhighwayswestfindingtheirtripincrediblyeasybeforereachingthetownofMbararainthesouthwestofthecountry,viaastopinJezza,avillageinMpigiDistrict.Heretheystayinadisgustinghotel,afterdrivingthroughteaplantationsinanattempttodiscoveralovelyteahousehotel,whichinthemindofRichard,wasboundtofoundduetoteaprogrammeshe'dseen.
InMbararatheystayedintheEconomicLodgewithJeremyhavingabedwithfaecesonit.TheyleftthehoteldisgustedbeforeRichardhastheideatomakethecars'hotels'.JamesmodifieshisVolvobyaddingalibrary,RichardaddsacookerandJeremyaddsacoffin.Thecoffinheusestoputhisclothesin,hesleepsonEgyptianCotton.
TheyleaveforLakeEdward,campingovernighttherebecauseofitsbeautybeforeheadinginsearchoftheriverheadingforLakeKivu.Noneoftheriversconnectthelakeastheyallheadeastratherthansouth.Theygiveup,leavingthemdisappointed.ThenJeremylooksatamapanddiscoversthesourceoftheNilemustbeontheothersideofLakeVictoria.HisreasoningisthattheMediterraneanSeaiseffectivelyaninlandseaandsoGibraltaristhetruemouthoftheNile,ratherthanAlexandriainEgypt.
AfterdiscoveringthistheydecidethattheymustdrivestraighttotheothersideofLakeVictoriatogettothesoutheastcoastinTanzanianeartheSerengeti.TheystartthisjourneybyheadingsouthintotheRwenzoriMountains,findingthegoinghardandmostofthetimegettingtheirvehiclesstuckinmud.
